DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOLOGY
Objective:

Pharmacology Department is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how drugs interact with the body, their therapeutic uses, potential side effects, and their mechanisms of action. It is a critical field in the study of medicine and healthcare, as it bridges basic science and clinical practice. Here are the key objectives of pharmacology department:

  1. Understanding Drug Actions and Mechanisms: Pharmacodynamics: Study of the biological effects of drugs on the body, including the mechanisms by which drugs exert their therapeutic effects at the molecular, cellular, and tissue levels. Pharmacokinetics: Study of how the body absorbs, distributes, metabolizes, and excretes drugs. This includes understanding concepts like bioavailability, half-life, and clearance.
  2. Drug Classification: Learning about various classes of drugs based on their chemical structure, mechanism of action, therapeutic effects, and side effects.
  3. Therapeutic Use of Drugs: Learning about the appropriate use of drugs to treat diseases and conditions, including considerations for dosage, administration routes, and drug interactions.
  4. Adverse Drug Reactions and Toxicology: Understanding the potential harmful effects of drugs, including side effects, toxicity, and drug-induced diseases. And also learning how to manage and prevent adverse drug reactions, including understanding risk factors, monitoring, and intervention strategies.
  5. Drug Development and Regulation: Understanding the processes involved in the development of new drugs, including preclinical studies, clinical trials, regulatory approval (e.g., by the FDA or EMA), and post-marketing surveillance.
  6. Personalized Medicine and Drug Therapy: Understanding the role of genetics and individualized responses to drugs, which includes pharmacogenomics.
  7. Promoting Rational Drug Use: Encouraging safe, effective, and evidence-based drug prescribing and usage practices to improve patient outcomes.
