DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSY
Objective:

Pharmacognosy Department is to study the biological, chemical, and pharmacological properties of natural products, primarily those derived from plants, but also from animals and microorganisms, that are used for medicinal purposes. Its key objectives include:

  1. Identification and Classification:Understanding the various natural sources of medicinal compounds (e.g., plants, animals, and marine organisms) and classifying them according to their therapeutic potential.
  2. Phytochemistry: Investigating the chemical constituents of plants and other natural sources, such as alkaloids, glycosides, essential oils, and flavonoids, which may have medicinal value.
  3. Pharmacological Action: Studying how these natural products affect the body, including their mechanisms of action, therapeutic effects, and potential side effects.
  4. Quality Control and Standardization: Ensuring the quality, purity, and potency of natural products used in pharmaceutical preparations by applying methods like microscopy, chromatography, and other testing techniques.
  5. Formulation Development: Exploring the potential for developing natural product-based drugs and formulations, including herbal medicines, dietary supplements, and alternative therapies.
  6. Personalized Medicine and Drug Therapy: Understanding the role of genetics and individualized responses to drugs, which includes pharmacogenomics.
  7. Sustainability and Conservation: Addressing the ethical use of natural resources and promoting sustainable harvesting practices to ensure that medicinal plants and other organisms are not overexploited.
